The Department of Physical Education (DPE)
of Xi'an Jiaotong University undertakes the basic PE teaching
to students of the university. It boasts a total number of 84
teachers of excellent quality, including 8 professors, 29 associate
professors and 41 lecturers. DPE has 1 research institute of
sporting science and 1 MA conferring point in physical education
and athletic training. Of the well-equipped stadiums and gymnasium
covering an area of more than 110,000 sq.m. , there are 4 standard
athletic field including 3 synthetic resin ones, 8 tennis courts
covered by synthetic resin, and a number of courts for basketball,
volleyball, badminton, table tennis and other sports.
In 1992, Xi'an Jiaotong University was selected
by the State Commission of Education as a university with excellent
evaluation results in PE courses among nationwide general institutions
of higher learning. In 1996 and 2000, it was appraised as meritorious
university in implementing "Regulations for School PE Affairs"
by the Ministry of Education, the State Commission of Physical
Culture and Sports, and the Central Committee of the Youth League.
In 1995, it won the title of national exemplary school in extracurricular
PE training by the Sports Association of Chinese College Students
and the Sports Association of Middle School Students. In 1996,
it was appraised by the State Commission of Education and the
State Commission of Physical Culture and Sports as an exemplary
unit of implementing State Standards for Physical Exercises.
In
1996, the university won the President Cup prize awarded by
the State Commission of Education, the State Commission of Physical
Culture and Sports, and the Central Committee of the Youth League
for its outstanding work done in physical education. In 1997,
it was selected as an exemplary unit by the State Commission
of Physical Culture and Sports for National Mass Sports Activities.
It has won twice the title of excellent university for implementing
"Regulations for School PE Affairs" by the Provincial Bureau
of Education since 1996.
Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the first
universities authorized by the Ministry of Education to run
men's and women's basketball games and track and field events.
In 1997 its men's basketball team participated in the 19 th
World Universiade held in Italy on behalf of Chinese colleges
and won the championship. The women's team was the runner-up
in high-level group at the First National CUBA Intercollegiate
Basketball Championship in 1998. In recent years, the track
and field team has made outstanding performance in major contests
at national and provincial levels. It came out on top in various
provincial contests in the past few years.
