Job Resume

Zheng Nanning was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China in 1952. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi'an, China in 1975, and received his M.S. degree in Information and Control Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1981. In 1985, he graduated from Keio University in Japan, with a doctoral degree in Engineering. Currently, he is a professor in the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Since August 2003, he has been the President of Xi'an Jiaotong University. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.

Professor Zheng was formerly the Vice Dean of the School of Electronics and Information Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Currently, he is the Chief Scientist and the director of the Information Technology Committee of the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 Hi-Tech Program), a member of the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council, and Chair of the Association for Science and Technology of Shaanxi Province. Since 2000, he has been China's representative on the Governing Board of the International Association for Pattern Recognition. He presently serves as an executive deputy editor of the Chinese Science Bulletin and is a member of the Experts Advisory Committee of the Microsoft Asia Research Institute.

Academy and Scientific Findings

Professor Zheng has been engaged in fundamental and applied research in pattern recognition, machine vision and image processing, intelligent systems, and neural networks since the late 1970s. He has directed a number of national key research projects, including several China 863 Hi-Tech projects, projects supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China, and various R&D projects for industry.

Professor Zheng Nanning has received several awards, including two second prizes for National Science and Technology Progress, a fourth prize for the National Technology Invention, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, the Science and Technology Award for Youth of China in 1990, and the Prize for Outstanding Young Chinese Scientists in 1996.
