Xi'an Jiaotong University is a comprehensive university with the characteristics of science and technology, including nine disciplines such as science, technology, medicine, economy, social sciences and law. The Dean's Office, Xi'an Jiaotong University, carried forward the glorious traditions of the Old Jiaotong University, and made gratifying achievements by taking root in the Northwest and exerting every effort for its advancement. In the management of education and teaching, it attached importance to educational reform and teaching quality. As a result, in 1994 and 1999, it was chosen as the Excellent Dean's Office in National Institutions of Higher Learning.

In the training of high-level talented people, the Dean's Office persists in taking education and teaching as the centre, keeps in step with the times, carries out active research in the education of undergraduates, and pushes on the reform and practice of the training model of talented people. In 1994, Xi'an Jiaotong University used a new method of enrolling new students, that is, each department enrolled and trained students. In 1995, the university was the first to put forward the idea of training talented people and training model, which aimed at widening the speciality and softening the orientation of the speciality. By widening the speciality, each student has the right to choose a new speciality in each new academic year. According to the policy of Wide and Solid Foundation, Firm Foundation of Basic Specialized Courses, Flexible Orientation of the Speciality, the University worked out the new teaching program that conformed to social progress, and gradually set up the course system of the three levels-the university, the college and the department, and a series of course system of the basic courses. In search of the training model in which knowledge, quality and ability of the students were harmoniously developed, the Dean's Office actively brought about the development in depth in the aspects of educational thinking, a change in concepts and educational reform. Meanwhile a broad and profound discussion was conducted among the teachers and the students at the university. In recent years, the University successively set up two national educational bases, one for engineering mathematics and the other for electronics and electrical engineering, a national educational base for the education of the students' cultural quality, ten centres for basic courses and experiments, a series of basic course teaching and experiment centres for the widened specialities, an engineering training centre. 119 items of educational reform were decided on for the study of the training model and course reform, and for the improvement of the students' creative awareness and creative ability.

In order to improve the students' comprehensive qualities, the Dean's Office trained the talented people in the form of combination of teaching in class and outside class. In the training program, the Dean's Office adopted a credit system in which a student must take required courses of 8 credits outside class practice, and it also made new requirements for students in the students' participation in such activities as outside class practice of science and technology, art and social practice. In the implementation of the Ninth Five-Year Plan, the University achieved 276 awards in the educational reform and practice, of which 19 items were national excellent awards of education, and 63 items were Shaanxi excellent awards of education. In 2002, ten textbooks were awarded prizes for national excellent textbooks.
