Xi'an Jiaotong University, one of the leading universities under direct administration by the State Education Commission of China, is a comprehensive university. There are 9 disciplines that lie in natural science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, liberal arts and law, with engineering science as its main focus. And she is one of the key universities financed by the State respectively in its 7th Five-year Plan and 8th Five-year Plan. And during the State's 9th Five-year Plan period, Xi'an Jiaotong University is labeled as one of the top 7 universities under the 211 project. Founded as Nan Yang College in 1896, it has developed into an extensive campus university of about 194 hectares, with the enrollment of 31,975 full-time students, among them there are over 10,000 postgraduates, including 2,000 doctorate students. There are 1,599 professors and associate professors, 4 state-key laboratories at the national level, 20 state-key disciplines, 15 post-doctoral research stations, 98 research institutes, 8 independent research centers, 70 laboratories, 5 university-owned factories, 2 presses, a large-scale modern library with the collection of 1,880,000 books and a scientific center that covers an area of 12,700 square meters. Being centers of both teaching and scientific research, Xi'an Jiaotong University has entered a brand-new historic era of development since April 2000. At that time, the State Council made the decision to merge it with Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics and Xi'an Medical University.

Xi'an Jiaotong University started her master program even before 1949 and has developed quickly since the implementation of the statute on degree in 1981, and the State Education Commission authorized it to establish the school of postgraduate in 1984 as the firstling. Under the authorization of the State Council, there are 157 disciplines and specialties that are authorized to confer master's degree, 102 disciplines and specialties that are authorized to confer PhD degree, 18 state-authorized academic stations of independent disciplines that can also confer PhD degree, as well as 6 stations that are authorized to confer such specialty degrees as Master of Engineering and MBA, etc. There are also over 300 doctoral supervisors, 5 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 6 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Since 1981, over 2,000 PhD degrees and more than 10,000 Mater's degrees have been conferred. The graduated postgraduates generally enjoy a good reputation in their employing units, 15 of them were awarded by the State Education Commission and Academic Degree Committee the title of Chinese Contributive PhD and Mater's Degree Obtainers. With its abundant faculty and staff members, favorable research conditions, precise ethos of study, high quality of teaching and researching and the fine campus environment, Xi'an Jiaotong University has become one of the key national centers to foster postgraduates.

In order to encourage the postgraduates to develop fully with hard work and good virtues, the university carries out the scholarship system which is including ordinary scholarship for any qualified postgraduate and excellence scholarship and consisting of Three Virtues Scholarship, monomial scholarship, enterprise scholarship and individual scholarship. Besides, doctorial students can also apply for the topnotch doctorial student scholarship and excellent doctorial thesis funds. In the light of Three Assists policy, doctorial students can also be paid according to the amount of their undertaken task during their study in the university.

Since 1993, there has been great development in the recruitment of doctorial student after some important reforms.
